I have always loved children’s clothes, even before I had children myself.
I began designing with the aim of changing people’s minds about childrenswear. It seemed that children were expected to wear either mass-produced clothing or expensive, overly decorative pieces that were often impractical or anachronistic—neither of which reflected what childhood is really about.
I found myself starting CARAMEL Baby&Child with no formal background in fashion. I spent two years searching for beautifully made pieces, tracking down handcrafted knitwear from Peru and artisan clothing from small designers in London and the Cotswolds.
Running the company from my home was enormous fun, and in 1999 I opened a small shop tucked away in Brompton Cross. However, it soon became clear that my sources couldn’t provide the full range of sizes required for children’s clothing. So I began designing the clothes myself.
My goal was to create a modern, distinctive style that felt individual whilst remaining luxurious and understated—beautiful yet practical. We push the boundaries of expectation for childrenswear.
Children’s clothing may have a relaxed quality, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t feel modern. Caramel draws on the formality of continental European style, balanced with a sense of laid-back Englishness.
Vintage pieces often inspire our collections, their charm reinterpreted for the present. Our clothes are designed to be functional and timeless, with careful attention to detail. Each piece crafted from beautiful fabrics and nostalgic knits in contemporary hues.
Often people discover our clothes by word of mouth—recognisable, distinctive and sometimes slightly quirky. I believe it is possible to build a successful business driven by intuition, creativity and passion.
We design clothes for adventure, and we are on an adventure ourselves—one that still thrills me every day.
Best wishes,
Eva Karayiannis
