In conversation with Flo Morrissey

We spend time with musician Flo Morrissey reflecting on family, a return to London, and the quiet influence of nature on her life and music, as she releases her new single, Till I Met You.

Being one of nine siblings must have been an extremely energetic childhood - how has this impacted your role as a mother?

It definitely made me appreciate the importance of patience, unconditional love and finding your voice with so many siblings around - I love the magic amongst the chaos. I’m the eldest daughter of my siblings so I definitely felt like a mini mum growing up and always knew I wanted to have children young.

Having grown up in Notting Hill - does the city still hold a space in your heart? Tell us about your favourite part of London.

London definitely holds an important space in my heart.. but for the past decade I haven’t lived here- we moved a lot with the children - to California and Italy for a few years and I didn’t feel at home in London for a long time.. but now I am back living here with my kids and it feels so right and important. My favourite parts of London are probably the parks and green spaces- Hyde park, Richmond, London Fields, Hampstead Heath.. walking for hours and letting myself get a little lost. I also love so many music venues here like The Barbican , Cafe Oto, Earth in Hackney, Southbank Centre and The Roundhouse. It’s been really inspiring to immerse myself back into going to see live music again and dreaming up my own show soon.

So much of your music and content is rooted in the outdoor world - how does nature inspire you?

I never feel alone when in nature and that helps me to connect with my subconscious mind when writing songs and understanding myself more.. Nature helps me to appreciate that the smallest moments of growth are sometimes the most mighty and brave.

Do your children play any part in your creative process when making music - do you encourage them to pursue music in future?

My children inspire me every day. They were homeschooled until this past January- so they would be there when songs were written and are always a sacred part of that process. Though they often tell me to stop singing and playing guitar so that they can sing their own songs!
