Summer Rituals With Mélissa Fall
This summer, we travel to the quietly enchanting region of Aveyron to spend time with Mélissa Fall—photographer and mother to Elénore, Elisabeth, and Amans. Rooted in a rural landscape that feels almost painterly in its stillness and light, Melissa’s world is one of creativity, simplicity, and deep connection to nature. Her children are both her muses and companions—appearing in sun-drenched images that capture the fleeting wonder of childhood.
She shares the slow rituals that shape her family’s summer, the freedom she hopes her children will carry with them, and the beauty she finds in the everyday.
Q: Summer in Aveyron feels like a chapter from a storybook—how does the season shape your family’s days? Are there rituals or small adventures you find yourself returning to each year?
A: We live close to nature, so our family life is gently guided by the seasons. In summer, we love to spend our time in the fields. Each year, we help our farmer friends harvest wheat, sunflowers,...
Q: Your photography captures the quiet wonder of childhood so effortlessly—what is it about summer that feels especially magical?
A: Summer feels magical to me because of the vibrant light—it seems to illuminate the freedom of childhood. Children are always playing, laughing, running, creating adventures... For me, it's a true joy to capture these moments.
Q: How does your approach to dressing your children shift with the season?
A: With each season, I try to choose the most beautiful pieces from my favourite children’s brands, always prioritising quality and comfort. In summer, I’m drawn to light fabrics like silks, loose cuts, and soft yet bright tones. Liberty prints are always a favourite.
Q: What do you hope your children will remember most about these sun-soaked summers—the slow moments, the wild ones, or perhaps a little of both?
A: I hope they remember all those sunlit moments of freedom—wild and simple. For me, the most beautiful childhood memories are like treasures, and I hope these summers will become part of theirs.
