Eva Karayiannis, a former lawyer who grew up in Athens founded Caramel in 1999. She is a designer with immense passion and strong vision who set out to challenge outdated, limited perceptions of traditional childrenswear. And so she started to create clothes that were rooted in modern British design employing plenty of home grown craftsmanship.
For Eva wanted to design and create clothes with the quality, detail and modern spirit that childrenswear up until that point lacked. Caramel became the go-to label for clothes for design aficionados and influential fashion editors. “I treated it in the way you might womenswear, that is stop the taboo of colour and fabric.” Which meant babies wore cashmere and boys were dressed in sophisticated shades of ‘offf’ pink! Nearly twenty years on, her design vision has spawned a growing lifestyle brand which includes a womenswear and homewares collections.
Her idiosyncratic vision and highly discerning way with texture, colour and print has spawned a burgeoning lifestyle brand with 10 stores worldwide (including New York, Tokyo and the Ukraine) as well as being available in over 100 independent retailers. “We are still a ‘family style run business’ that does not advertise. We pay the utmost attention to detail and pride ourselves on creating clothes that can be worn and handed down between siblings and generations.
