Spotlight on Brompton Cross

200 years ago, the village of Brompton (as it was once known) and the site of Caramel’s first store was renowned for its wholesome clear air, flourishing markets and nursery gardens. Brompton Park Nursery, the site of the V&A today was where Henry Wise, Queen Anne’s celebrated gardener lived.

The Great exhibition of 1851 put pay to that: it was the catalyst which transformed this prosperous rural parish into a busy metropolitan borough, a hive of art, design and education that was reflected in the vibrant mix of museum culture and highly covetable design shops.

“There was something very special about the area when we first opened our store there, “remembers Caramel founder, Eva Karayiannis. “It also lacked the formality of more traditional shopping areas such as Sloane Street or Bond Street. It wasn’t where the big brands settled but it was a destination shopping area – more word of mouth – for customers who were looking for that thrilling sense of discovery. “
