The Wardrobe Mistress | Jane McFarland’s Womenswear Picks

Fashion Director of The Sunday Times Style magazine, Jane McFarland tells us why Caramel makes the best destination store, how we all need a shirt dress and pens an ode to jumpsuits.

Caramel is my go-to for those in-between pieces throughout the year. It’s less about seasonal trends and more about wardrobe staples. I’ve always been a fan of its printed shirts (I love the retro feel especially when paired with high waist trousers) and there is always at least one coat I have to have every winter. It’s the perfect mix of classic and Britishness eclecticism.

It’s also the perfect spot for under-the-radar labels that you won’t see on everyone else (or their Instagram). With an edit of both burgeoning American brands and up and coming British designers, I often feel like a sartorial sleuth when I snap up something new instore.

The shirt dress is everywhere this season, but has never really gone out of style. It’s an easy piece to throw on in summer and is perfect to wear from work onwards. I’ll wear it later in the year with a utilitarian trench coat and roll-neck.

The low-waist jumpsuit creates a fluid silhouette which I love for weekends or easy summer days when you just want loose-fitting clothing. I’ve layered it over a striped shirt, but a tee-shirt would work as well. I’d also switch in trainers or more polished brogues for the weekend and work respectively. Everyone always thinks that a jumpsuit “isn’t for them” but it’s one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe and is surprisingly easy quick fix in the morning when despairing over what to wear.
