My memories of this dress are blurred with memories of seeing this photo in my parents’ photo album but I do remember this trip to Texas to visit my grandparents. Living in San Francisco, the weather is very cool and my mom usually dressed me in lots of layers. If I was wearing a dress I usually had pants underneath (she also didn’t dress me in very girly clothes and I was most often in overalls). So I remember the warm weather and bare legs from this trip. Looking at this photo now, I realize this is just the kind of outfit I would dress a little girl in today.

The green dress. From age 2-6 years, we were inseparable. I vaguely remember sitting and watching my grandmother make it for me … I was so proud. It was long to the ground, beautiful and mine! I wafted around in this green dress for over 4 years … like nobody in the world owned something as special as I did! I wore it until it went above my knees and no matter how hard I willed, I could not squeeze it over my head. Sometimes I wonder if secretly, part of my journey with papier mache is endlessly trying to replicate the feeling of that green dress …

My mum used to dress us in the most traditional outfits. The blouse always matched the dress, and of course there was always a matching hair clip or ribbon. There is even (I wish I had it to show you) a photo of my four siblings and me all dressed in the same matching outfits – dresses for the girls and short overalls for the boys (lots of navy blues and reds). Nearly every photo of my early childhood shows me dressed like this… until I reached the age of 8 or 9 and started pleading for 1980′s purple leggings and hot-pink tops! I imagine my mum must have cringed to see her little girl dressed in pink leggings!

Created in 2005, Natalia Vodianova’s Naked Heart Foundation works to change attitudes towards disability in Russia, creating specialised support centres for disabled children and their families, and exciting play parks that every child can enjoy. Inspired by their work Eva Karayiannis, Caramel’s creative director, wanted to lend her support.

Following the success of the Naked Heart Foundation t-shirt in 2009, Natalia asked Caramel to design a dress inspired by her childhood memories. A delightful brief has resulted in a wonderful piece.
